Listening to the sound of air over water after the gastric tube is generally determined by the patient’s lying position and whether the gastric tube is in the stomach.
1. Patient’s lying position: the patient lies flat on the hospital bed in a comfortable position.
2. Whether the gastric tube is in the stomach: fix the gastric tube so that it does not slip off, check whether the gastric tube is inserted into the stomach, use a syringe to suction the stomach contents; or put the end of the gastric tube into a bowl of cooled boiled water or saline to see whether there are bubbles escaping, if you do not see any gastric contents or no air bubbles in the water cup, then it means that the gastric tube is not inside the stomach, and there will not be any sound of passing gas over water.
After checking the gastric tube in the stomach, use a sterile syringe to extract 10-20 ml of air, let the sterile syringe connect to the other end of the gastric tube, place the stethoscope in the patient’s left upper abdominal stomach area, and quickly inject 10-20 ml of air from the catheter into the stomach, at which time you will hear the sound of air over water.
The above operation should be carried out by a specialized doctor and should not be done without authorization.
