What are the sequelae of meningitis?

Possible sequelae of meningitis include severe mental retardation, hydrocephalus, impaired language comprehension and expression, epilepsy, etc.
1. Severe mental retardation: Meningitis causes organic damage to the brain, and most of them are mild mental retardation, which is slow to recover after healing and usually takes one to three years. Severe cases may lead to lifelong mental retardation and cause serious impact on life.
2. Hydrocephalus: Meningitis can lead to impaired circulation of cerebrospinal fluid and hydrocephalus. This is common in poorly treated or late-treated patients, especially in newborns and younger infants where meningeal adhesions and impaired cerebrospinal fluid circulation lead to this condition.
3. Reduced language comprehension and expression: Because of the cranial nerve injury, language dysfunction, deafness and visual impairment may occur.
4. Epilepsy: Meningitis involving the cortex may induce seizures.
The above sequelae do not occur in every patient, if there is any discomfort, please consult a doctor in time.
