What is gamma-glutamyltransferase for?

Gamma-glutamyltransferase (also known as gamma-glutamyltransferase, GGT, gamma-GT, gamma-glutamyltransferase) is a transferase that catalyzes the transfer of the gamma-glutamyl functional group from the molecule. It is mainly used clinically for the diagnosis of liver disease. GGT plays a key role in the gamma-glutamyl cycle, the synthesis and degradation of glutathione, and the pathways of drug and exogenous detoxification. This transferase is present in many tissues, especially the liver, and is medically important as a marker for the diagnosis of liver disease. Elevated serum GGT activity can be seen in liver, biliary system, pancreas and renal diseases. Potentially elevated GGT is usually seen in patients with chronic viral hepatitis infections and usually takes 12 months or more to appear. The diagnosis of liver disease should also be based on a comprehensive analysis of the patient’s history, clinical presentation, and the remaining ancillary tests, and should be made under the supervision of a clinician.
