How should I check my child’s height?

If your child’s height growth is too slow, you should check in three steps: Step 1: Take a height measurement to evaluate where your child is in the range. Then take an orthopantomogram of the child’s left wrist to see if the child’s bone age matches the actual age. If there is clearly a problem with both, continue with the next step; if there is no problem or it is at the lower limit of the normal range, then observe and should be rechecked every six months.

Step 2: If the child’s height is outside the normal range, we should look for the reason, and we can do some tests, such as growth hormone stimulation test, thyroid function, liver function, kidney function, etc. If it is a girl, you should also do chromosome examination and ultrasound examination, etc.

Step 3: If the child is diagnosed to be undersized due to disease, growth hormone treatment can be used. Before the treatment, some more tests should be done, such as pituitary MRI, insulin-like growth factor-1 test, spinal ortho-lateral radiographs, etc.
