Unclogging the carotid artery to prevent strokes
Carotid artery stenosis is the most important cause of ischemic stroke. In China, about 500,000 people have ischemic stroke every year, 1/4 of the patients die within 1 year after the onset, and half of the survivors cannot take care of themselves. Statistics show that about 2/3 of patients with ischemic stroke have cerebral infarction related to carotid artery stenosis. However, most patients are not aware of the relationship between carotid artery stenosis and stroke, and even many physicians lack proper understanding of this, so that patients fail to receive timely and effective treatment, and ipsilateral stroke occurs, causing paralysis and increasing the burden on families and society. Active treatment of carotid stenosis is important to prevent ischemic stroke, and commonly used methods include drug therapy, carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid stenting (CAS).
