Two thirds of the gastrectomy is a major gastrectomy procedure, after which the stomach’s accommodative function may recover only in about three to six months, while the secretory and abrasive functions are basically unrecoverable.
The gastric tolerance function can be restored with the gradual expansion of food intake, and this process takes about six months.
The secretory function of the stomach is difficult to recover after gastrectomy because most of the cells that secrete gastric acid and endogenous factors have been removed, and the patient can take vitamin C orally to create an acidic environment similar to gastric acid after surgery. Gastric grinding function is basically lost after gastrectomy, and will not be repaired with time because the sinus section is also removed with gastrectomy.
It is recommended that after gastrectomy patients try to eat as little and as often as possible, try to eat light and easy-to-digest food, and eat less food containing alcohol, spicy and stimulating food, which can cause gastric irritation.
