Why some people don’t have altitude sickness

Some people do not have plateau reaction is related to their good physical condition, step hiking, year-round adaptation to the plateau environment and so on. Plateau reaction is a kind of plateau disease, which refers to all kinds of discomforts produced by entering the plateau above 3,000 meters above sea level rapidly, and the common symptoms include headache, insomnia, loss of appetite, fatigue, and respiratory difficulties. The occurrence of plateau reaction is related to the speed of going up the mountain, altitude, living time and physical fitness. When the ascent speed is slower and the altitude is lower, after a few days of acclimatization, the incidence of plateau reaction will be reduced. At the same time, people who live on the plateau all year round as well as those who have intermittent hypoxic stimulation and exercise in low-pressure chambers prior to climbing are also less likely to suffer from plateau reaction. Once plateau reaction occurs, before the symptoms improve, the climbing should be terminated and bed rest should be provided. For those with more severe symptoms, nasal cannula or mask oxygen intake should be given (1~2L/min), and for those whose symptoms are not relieved or even worsened, the patient should be transferred to a lower altitude area for medical treatment as soon as possible.
