Jiang Hou Pu has the effects of strengthening the spleen and drying dampness (strengthening the spleen to get rid of dampness), lowering the qi and removing fullness (allowing qi to move downward to alleviate the discomfort of flatulence), harmonizing the stomach and stopping vomiting, and its side-effects are not known. Jiang Houpu (姜厚朴) is used for treating dampness obstruction in the middle Jiao (湿阻中焦), epigastric (abdominal) distension and fullness, food stagnation (stagnation of food in the stomach due to indigestion), abdominal distension and constipation, failure of lung qi to descend, phlegm and drink (pathological products of impaired metabolism of water and fluid), wheezing and coughing, indistinguishable wetness and turbidness, cholera and diarrhea, depression of the seven senses, and phlegm and qi obstruction of prune nucleus qi (similar to pharyngeal allodynia), and so on. It is bitter, warm, dry and humid, easily depleting qi and injuring fluid, so it should be used with caution in qi deficiency and fluid deficiency and pregnant women.
