What is cardiac phytoneurosis?

Cardiac neurosis is a neurological physiologic disorder with cardiovascular abnormalities such as panic attacks and chest tightness, but without organic lesions, mostly due to vegetative nerve disorders. Cardiac phytoneurosis is usually induced by abnormal emotions, such as anxiety, emotional excitement, mental stimulation, etc., resulting in abnormal excitation and inhibition of the nerves, and the phytoneuroses that regulate cardiovascular function are affected, causing symptoms including dizziness, panic attacks, sweating, fatigue, chest tightness, chest pain, and so on. However, clinical examination fails to detect substantial cardiovascular lesions, usually only arrhythmia can be found, and ST-segment depression may occur in some patients. The patients are mostly young women, and the symptoms are irregular and variable, sometimes severe and sometimes mild, and flare up or aggravate after emotional fluctuations. However, the symptoms are usually not serious, and the clinical diagnosis of cardiac neurosis can be made after exclusion of congenital heart disease, valvular lesions, coronary artery disease, myocarditis, and cardiac arrhythmia, and so on. It is recommended to consult a professional doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Psychotherapy is generally used, supplemented by symptomatic treatment such as lowering the heart rate and improving myocardial blood supply.
