Red eye is often referred to as acute conjunctivitis. It is called “pink eye” because it is mainly characterized by bloodshot and red eyes. The reason for this is that when the resistance decreases, the conjunctiva is irritated or infected by the outside world, resulting in an inflammatory reaction in the local tissues, resulting in a foreign body sensation, burning sensation, itching discomfort, and tearing discomfort in the eyes. Acute conjunctivitis, with bacterial infection as the main cause. It manifests as a sudden onset of marked conjunctival congestion and edema, with a large amount of yellow sticky discharge, and even when waking up in the morning, the upper and lower eyelids of the eyes are stuck by the discharge, making it difficult for the patient to open the eyes and requiring water to wash them before opening them; some patients also develop swelling of the lymph nodes in the ear or a generalized fever. Some patients also have a viral infection. The presentation is partially similar to bacterial conjunctivitis, but the difference is that instead of a yellow discharge, the patient is predominantly tearful. Viral infections are more likely to involve the cornea, so the symptoms of foreign body sensation and photophobia are more severe than those of bacterial conjunctivitis. At present, the main treatment is still based on local symptomatic supportive treatment, such as local flushing of the conjunctival sac, which can clean up the discharge from the sensory conjunctiva and reduce irritation of the eye, not to mention covering the eye so as not to affect the discharge of secretions, together with local eye drops treatment, but it is necessary to choose the appropriate drug drops treatment according to the type of germs, and then give oxyfloxacin eye drops or tobramycin eye drops for bacterial infections. For viral infections, acyclovir eye drops are given and cold compresses are applied locally. As mentioned above, the symptoms of conjunctivitis are variable and not every one of them behaves the same, likewise its treatment is also different and requires an individualized plan according to the patient’s situation in order to achieve good results.
