What is diverticulum of the ascending colon

As a benign disease of the colon, diverticula of the ascending colon are not common in clinical practice. Diverticula are categorized into true diverticula and pseudodiverticula, and most of them belong to true diverticula. The only way to diagnose diverticula of the ascending colon is through colonoscopy or barium enema angiography, and most of the diverticula are manifested as vague pain and discomfort in the right side of the abdomen, and in severe cases, bleeding may even be manifested as bloody stools. Usually, the diverticulum does not need to be treated if its diameter does not exceed 1cm, and should be observed regularly and followed up closely. If the diverticulum is more than 1.5cm in diameter, or if there are recurrent episodes of diverticulitis or even diverticular hemorrhage, surgical treatment can be considered. Surgical procedures include simple diverticulectomy, partial colectomy or even right hemicolectomy.
