The pathological changes in carotid atherosclerosis progress slowly and if risk factors are actively controlled early the lesions may partially subside.
If the carotid stenosis is severe or there is an acute event caused by rupture of an unstable plaque, involvement of brain tissue can lead to serious consequences.
