Are the antibodies produced by the rabies vaccine permanent?

The rabies vaccine produces antibody levels that gradually decline over time and are not permanently effective. According to the Technical Guidelines for Rabies Prevention and Control (2016 Edition), the use of human diploid cell vaccine and Vero cell vaccine for the initial pre-exposure immunization using the 2-shot (0, 28 days) and 3-shot (0, 7, 28 days) procedures, respectively, the antibody decreases significantly after 1 year, and the antibody positivity of the 3-shot procedure is even higher, and vaccination with a booster shot can increase the antibody level. After receiving rabies vaccine, it is under the protection period of rabies vaccine for a certain period of time, and re-exposure does not require re-vaccination. According to WHO, for those occupational groups who are continuously or frequently at high risk of exposure, booster immunization is required only when the neutralizing antibody titer drops below 0.5 IU/ml, usually for 3 months. Therefore, the antibodies produced by rabies vaccine are not permanent. In case of cat and dog scratches and bites, it is recommended to clean the wounds in time and seek medical attention in time to assess the need for rabies vaccination.
