Vagus nerve stimulation mechanism

The mechanism of action of vagus nerve stimulation for epilepsy is mainly the following two aspects: 1. neuromodulation: that is, by stimulating the vagus nerve in the neck, the impulses are transmitted from the left vagus nerve to the brain, and then through the brainstem to the thalamus, hippocampus and other parts of the brain, inhibiting the abnormal discharge of epilepsy, and then reducing seizures or spreading; 2. neurotransmitter inhibition: experiments have shown that by stimulating the vagus nerve, the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain increases and the release of excitatory neurotransmitters relatively decreases, which in turn inhibits epileptic discharges in the brain.
