What to do if you are accidentally bitten by a poisonous snake

Accidentally bitten by a venomous snake, you should quickly get out of the dangerous situation and keep the injured part down, immediately ligate the wound at the proximal end, clean the wound and check the wound to promote detoxification, antivenom if necessary, and hemodialysis in severe cases.

1. Rapidly get out of the dangerous situation and keep the injured part down: after being bitten by a snake, you should observe the environment, if the environment you are in is dangerous, you should quickly leave and move to a safe environment for first aid. The injured part should be kept immobile and continuously in a downward position to slow down the flow of snake venom in the body.

2. Immediate proximal ligation: This is to prevent the toxin from circulating with the blood, causing systemic symptoms and aggravating the condition. It is usually ligated more than one joint above the wound. Attention should be paid to relaxing the ligature at regular intervals and then ligating it again to prevent ischemic necrosis caused by the ligature.

3. Cleaning and checking the wound: usually use water, salt water or soap water to clean the wound, and at the same time check the wound to see if there is any residual snake teeth, and remove them if there are any.

4. Promote detoxification: the principle of negative pressure can be utilized to promote the discharge of venom.

5. Antivenom or hemodialysis if necessary: For venomous snake bites, antivenom is needed. If the snake is non-venomous, then it can be resolved by the above treatment and antivenom is generally not required.

Venomous snake bites should be treated promptly at a hospital while basic life-saving measures are being taken. If you are able to kill the snake at the scene, it is best to take photos and leave them for the doctor to make more judgment on what kind of serum to use, or bring the dead snake directly to the hospital and let the professionals make the judgment as well.
