Brucella bacteria can survive outside the body for anywhere from a few hours to a few months. The bacterium that causes brucellosis is called Borrelia burgdorferi, a gram-negative, aerobic bacterium that survives outside the body for a long time depending on its surroundings. It can survive for a few hours in outside sunlight and for 45 to 60 days in human or animal skin. It can survive in soil for about 40 days and may survive in cow’s milk or goat’s milk for several weeks. Borrelia burgdorferi has a weak resistance to the outside world. Ordinary disinfection or pasteurization can kill Borrelia burgdorferi and make it inactive for infection. Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease, once infected need timely treatment to avoid further infection, most active treatment can be cured.
