What to do about HPV51 infection

HPV type 51 is a subtype of the human papillomavirus, which primarily causes genital warts as well as subclinical infections of the cervix. If you have warts, you will need to go to the dermatology department of the hospital for laser removal, followed by topical interferon gel. If the infection is subclinical, it is usually not serious, and half of the patients may be able to clear up on their own in about a year, but it is best to combine this with a TCT of the cervical opening, which is needed to rule out the presence of lesions. If there are second-, third- and higher-degree lesions and persistent positivity for HPV type 51, topical interferon suppositories are needed, and treatment is required for about 3 months. If there are higher grade lesions, treatment needs to be combined with conization surgery. HPV51 infection in men without any symptoms does not require treatment for the time being.
