Common causes of knee pain in the elderly – osteoarthritis

  Clinical manifestations of osteoarthritis of the knee joint 1. Most often seen in middle-aged and elderly obese women, often with a history of exertion.  2. The onset of the disease is slow, and the pain is aggravated by knee joint activities. The pain is more pronounced when walking long distances and squatting.  3. Some patients may experience interlocking phenomenon or joint swelling and fluid accumulation.  4. Knee joint movement is limited, and there may be popping and grinding sounds when moving, and some of them may have deformity, and inversion deformity is more obvious.  5. Frontal and lateral X-rays of the knee joint may show hyperplasia of the patella, femoral condyles, and tibial plateau, and the intercondylar ridge of the tibia may become sharp, which is known as a “bone spur”, and the joint space may be narrowed, sometimes with free bodies.  Treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee joint Treatment includes oral analgesics, glucosamine, sodium glacial injection, arthroscopy, and in advanced stages, arthroplasty may be considered. The surgical technique is now relatively mature.
