How to determine the severity of brainstem infarction

The severity of brainstem infarction is related to the size and location of the infarction. If the infarction area is small and the infarction site is in the pons, the condition may be mild; if the infarction area is large and the infarction site is in the medulla oblongata or midbrain, the condition is serious and may be life-threatening. 1. Infarction area (1) If the area of brainstem infarction is small, the symptoms will be relatively mild, with clinical manifestations of limb numbness, weakness, or mild dizziness, and most of them can be restored to normal after early treatment. (2) If the infarction area is large and affects the patient’s consciousness and respiratory system, such as coma, respiratory depression, etc., which is life-threatening, the chances of recovering to normal are small even after timely treatment. 2. Infarction site: The brainstem is divided into pons, midbrain and medulla oblongata. (1) Clinically, pontine infarction is more common, which manifests as limb activity disorder, and most of them have a good prognosis after active treatment and later rehabilitation exercises. (2) Midbrain infarction is prone to cause abnormal eye movement, eye fixation and other sequelae, and it is more difficult to completely return to normal. (3) In case of medullary infarction, it is easy to cause serious symptoms, which can jeopardize the patient’s life and it is difficult to return to normal. Patients with brainstem infarction should seek medical treatment in time and as early as possible.
