Butterfly spots, also known as butterfly erythema, is a typical rash manifestation of connective tissue disease and systemic lupus erythematosus in dermatology clinics. Its pathogenesis is caused by the dysfunction of the body’s immune system that produces autoantibodies that fail to recognize its own organs, resulting in an attack on its own tissues. When patients first develop the disease, they often visit the doctor with facial butterfly-shaped erythema, oral ulcers, discoid erythema, joint pain, fever, general malaise, etc. The facial rash is mainly distributed on the cheeks and back of the nose bilaterally, similar to a butterfly, and is also called butterfly spot. The rash is photosensitive, and the rash worsens after sun exposure. When patients develop the above symptoms, they should immediately go to the hospital to improve the relevant examination and treat with glucocorticoids for symptomatic treatment.
