Total bilirubin is mainly used to assess the degree, type and cause of jaundice, and its elevation does not necessarily mean that there is a problem with the liver, and it can be divided into physiologic and pathologic elevation.
Physiological increase: total bilirubin can be increased in newly born full-term babies, and it can be restored to the normal range after one month, which is mostly seen in neonatal jaundice; total bilirubin can also be increased physiologically in pregnant women.
2. Pathological increase: Pathological increase of total bilirubin is mostly seen in primary biliary cirrhosis, acute jaundice hepatitis, viral hepatitis, hemolytic jaundice, cholelithiasis and so on.
Increased total bilirubin alone cannot diagnose liver disease, but need to be combined with other test results and clinical manifestations, specific matters are recommended to consult a doctor, so that the doctor can give a reasonable explanation and advice.
