What is the treatment for Crohn’s disease and lower abdominal distension?

If it is clear that the lower abdominal distension is caused by Crohn’s disease, it is usually treated with medication.
The active phase requires control of the inflammatory response with aminosalicylates, glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants (e.g. azathioprine) and, in the case of infection, treatment with antibiotics. Commonly used antibiotics are nitroimidazoles and quinolones.
If in remission and symptoms are not significant, maintenance treatment with drugs such as azathioprine, mercaptopurine and infliximab may be used for a longer period of time.
Only some people with serious complications, such as the development of intestinal obstruction or heavy bleeding, will require surgical treatment.
