Composition of Xiao Chai Hu Tang

Xiao Chaihu Tang is a traditional Chinese medicine formula composed of Chaihu, Scutellaria baicalensis, Semixia, Ginger, Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng, Fructus Jujubae and Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae. In the formula, Chaihu drains evil qi and stagnation; Scutellaria baicalensis clears heat and reduces excretion; Semixia and Ginger lower the rebelliousness and harmonize the stomach, removing dampness and stopping vomiting; Ginseng and Jujubes support positive qi; and Glycyrrhiza glabra harmonizes all the medicines (harmonizing the properties of different Chinese medicines). The combination of these herbs can help to clear the exterior and interior of the body and reconcile the Shaoyang (treating external heat illnesses in which the evil is between the exterior and interior of the body). This formula mainly treats typhoid fever Shaoyang (one of the six meridians in the theory of typhoid fever, which is between the surface and the inside), with symptoms such as alternating fear of cold and fever, tightness in the chest, inappetence for food and drink, uneasiness, nausea and vomiting, bitter taste in the mouth and dryness in the throat, and dizziness, etc. The formula is also useful in the treatment of fever of the outside world. In this formula, Chai Hu is ascending and dispersing in nature, while Scutellaria baicalensis and Pinellia ternata are dry in nature, therefore, it is contraindicated for those with deficiency of Yin and little fluid (dry mouth and tongue, dry stools); and it is forbidden for those who are allergic to any medicines. Please consult a medical practitioner for medication use.
