Can early stage of gastric cancer be cured? The cure rate of early stage cancer is generally high, but there are still many people who doubt whether early stage stomach cancer can be cured, because there are not many cases of cured stomach cancer. In fact, most gastric cancer patients are already in the middle and late stage when they are diagnosed, which has lost the best time for gastric cancer treatment, thus resulting in a low cure rate of gastric cancer. However, for early stage gastric cancer patients, if treated properly, the possibility of cure is still relatively high. Surgical radical resection is the only way to cure gastric cancer, so surgery is the first choice for treating early gastric cancer. The high cure rate of early gastric cancer by surgery and postoperative consolidation treatment is also the key to prolong the survival time of patients. The survival rate of early gastric cancer with single lesion after surgery is higher than that of multiple lesions, and the recurrence rate is also lower, only 2.8%. Some patients with recurrence are early gastric cancer with lesions invading the submucosa and lymphatic metastasis. In addition, early intramucosal carcinoma of gastric cancer should be operated as R1 and submucosal carcinoma as R2; for polypoid intramucosal carcinoma less than 2 cm, local excision of the carcinoma or R0 is completely sufficient. For individual type IIa and IIc invading the submucosa and having metastasis in lymph nodes, certain chemotherapy should be combined. In addition to the correct choice of treatment method, postoperative consolidation therapy should be paid attention to improve the cure rate. Methods used for post-operative consolidation therapy include Chinese medicine, radiotherapy and other methods, which are chosen according to patients’ conditions. Radiotherapy is effective in suppressing cancer, but attention should be paid to the prevention and relief of side effects, or combined with TCM to reduce toxicity and increase effectiveness of treatment. Patients are weak after early gastric cancer surgery, and the residual lesions may lead to recurrence or complications. To increase the thoroughness of early gastric cancer surgery treatment, therefore, adjuvant treatment with Chinese medicine is essential. Radiotherapy can effectively control local symptoms and can be used as post-operative adjuvant therapy or for patients who cannot be treated surgically, and it can achieve certain inhibitory effect, so it is also a common treatment method for early gastric cancer. However, radiotherapy has great toxic side effects, so it must be used in combination with traditional Chinese medicine to reduce the toxic side effects of radiotherapy and improve the immune function of patients.
