If the test has a bowed uterus, it indicates a uterine malformation, which is a congenital developmental abnormality that occurs when the bottom of the uterus is depressed causing the shape of the uterine cavity to change. This condition has an effect on pregnancy and may cause miscarriage. For recurrent spontaneous miscarriages, in addition to checking the chromosomes, a hysterosalpingogram is performed to determine if there is a developmental abnormality of the uterus. If the test determines a bowed uterus, surgical treatment can be used to correct it. A bowed uterus has essentially no effect on the menstrual cycle or menstrual flow and is not easy to detect. A hysterosalpingogram or hysteroscopy can be done to determine if there is a uterine abnormality.
