What are the benefits of endoscopic “minimally invasive” resection techniques for patients?

In recent years, with the enhancement of people’s health awareness and the gradual increase of gastrointestinal endoscopy, the detection of submucosal tumors, early cancers and precancerous lesions (such as atypical hyperplasia, adenomatous polyps, etc.) in the GI tract has rapidly increased. For these lesions in the GI tract, the traditional treatment method is surgical resection, which is effective, but the surgery is traumatic, the patient’s recovery is slow, the hospital stay is long, the treatment cost is high, and the quality of life after surgery is greatly reduced. The rapid development of transendoscopic interventional techniques in recent years has changed the concept of surgery, because most of the GI lesions can be removed endoscopically and traditional surgery is no longer required. 1.What diseases are suitable for endoscopic minimally invasive resection? 1) Gastrointestinal polyps 2) Submucosal tumors (e.g. smooth muscle tumors, mesenchymal tumors, lipomas, ectopic pancreas, etc.) 3) Precancerous lesions: high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia, flat bulging adenoma, etc. 4) Early cancer of the gastrointestinal tract 2. Methods of endoscopic minimally invasive resection At present, the common methods of endoscopic minimally invasive surgery are: endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal submucosal excision (ESE), and transoral endoscopic esophageal and gastric myotomy. For gastrointestinal polyps, saline is injected underneath the lesion to lift it significantly, and then it is removed with a trap, which is a minimally invasive endoscopic treatment called “endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). For early stage cancer of gastrointestinal tract, a ring mark is made around the lesion, then saline is injected under the lesion to make the lesion lift up obviously, and then the lesion is removed completely with a special stripping instrument, this endoscopic minimally invasive treatment method is called “endoscopic mucosal dissection (ESD)”, i.e. This endoscopic minimally invasive treatment method is called “endoscopic mucosal dissection (ESD)”, which means “eradicating” the tumor in the digestive tract. For submucosal tumor, special instruments can be used to excavate the tumor completely, and this endoscopic resection method is medically called “endoscopic submucosal excision (ESE)”, i.e. “excavating” the tumor on the digestive tract. b 1) Less invasive and easily tolerated by patients. It can not only remove the tumor completely, but also preserve the normal function of the digestive tract, which can avoid the decrease of the patient’s quality of life caused by surgical operations (such as open-chest and open-abdomen operations). 2)Low treatment cost: generally only 1/3-1/2 of surgery. 3)Fast recovery after surgery, short hospitalization time, generally patients can be discharged in 2-3 days, some can be even shorter.
