Is Laparoscopic Surgery for Chocolate Cysts Major Surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery for chocolate cysts is generally not major surgery, but not absolutely, if abdominopelvic adhesions are severe. A chocolate cyst is an ovarian endometriotic cyst, a cyst that forms when the endometrium is ectopically located in the ovary and cyclic bleeding causes blood to pool in the ovary. This cyst can lead to secondary dysmenorrhea, infertility, painful intercourse, and can also lead to extensive adhesions to the tissues in the pelvis. Most patients with chocolate cysts need to be treated with surgery. If the adhesions of the pelvic organs are not severe and the abdominopelvic cavity has not been treated with surgery in the past, the scope of the surgery is usually small. However, if the patient has severe pelvic adhesions, extensive metastases, and multiple previous abdominopelvic surgeries, it is possible that transabdominal surgery or laparoscopic surgery may be required for a wide range of injuries.
