Horseshoe, also known as water chestnut, has the efficacy of clearing heat, resolving phlegm and eliminating stagnation, and is used for the treatment of warm diseases such as thirst, jaundice and feverish gonorrhea (burning and stinging pain evident when urinating, accompanied by frequent urination and urgency, and discomfort from traction in the lower abdomen). Water chestnut is a plant of the genus Water chestnut in the family of Salicaceae. It is used as medicine with its bulb and above-ground parts, and is a kind of food ingredient used in both Chinese medicine and food in daily life. It is sweet in flavor and cold in nature, so for people with deficiency of cold and blood, it is not suitable to use water chestnut. Water chestnut should not be taken in excess to avoid aggravating one’s own coldness, leading to abdominal pain, diarrhea, and loose stools (thin, unformed feces) and other discomforts. It is recommended that water chestnuts be used under the guidance of a doctor, not on its own, and should be avoided along with raw and cold foods, so as not to cause discomfort.
