Diagnostic criteria for genital herpes

Genital herpes can be diagnosed based on a combination of epidemiology, clinical symptoms, and laboratory tests. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection of the skin and mucous membranes of the urogenital and anal areas.HSV can be categorized into type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2), and genital herpes is mainly caused by HSV-2, but can also be caused by HSV-1 or mixed infection of the two types. 1. Epidemiology: patients have a history of unsafe sex, or a history of multiple sexual partners, or a history of sexually transmitted infections; after infection with herpes viruses, the incubation period is usually 2 days to 2 weeks. 2. Clinical symptoms: lesions initially erythema, papules, and rapid development of single or clustered distribution of blisters, blisters burst to form the size of the vesicles or shallow ulcers, accompanied by pain or burning sensation, and so on. Men are more likely to be affected by the prepuce, coronal sulcus, glans, penile body and pubic mound; women are more likely to be affected by the labia majora and minora, vagina, cervix, perineum and pubic mound, etc. Anal and rectal involvement can be found in those who have anal sex. 3. Laboratory tests: collect the blister fluid, ulcerated surface exudate, urethral swabs or cervical swabs from the skin lesions of the patients and do HSV nucleic acid test, virus culture or antigen test, etc., all of which can be positive; collect the venous blood of the patients, which can be detected as positive serum antibody specific to HSV-2. Genital herpes has a certain chance of recurrence, which is usually easy to recur when the body resistance is low, immunity is low, exertion is good, staying up late, and women are around menstruation. Recurrent genital herpes usually has milder symptoms and shorter duration than primary herpes. Doctors need to make a diagnosis of genital herpes based on a combination of the above criteria, it is recommended that patients diagnosed with genital herpes go to the hospital in a timely manner, under the guidance of the physician to actively standardize the treatment.
