Timing of drainage tube removal after thyroidectomy

The time of drainage tube removal after thyroidectomy should be objectively analyzed based on the amount of fluid in the drainage tube and the size of the surgical wound. If the patient’s thyroid gland is benign, there is no need for lymph node dissection during surgery, the surgical wound is small, and the flow in the drainage tube after surgery is small, the drainage tube can be removed about 48 hours after surgery to avoid local infection caused by prolonged retention of the drainage tube. Second, if the patient undergoes surgery for malignant thyroid tumor, the lymph nodes in the periphery are cleared during surgery, the surgical trauma is larger, and the drainage fluid in the drainage tube after surgery is more. In this case, the drainage tube should be placed for a longer period of time, 3-4 days, before it can be removed, so that the fluid in the trauma can not be discharged smoothly due to premature removal of the drainage tube, causing infection of the incision.
