Does barrett’s esophagus require surgery?

Barrett’s esophagus does not necessarily require surgery, and different treatment options, such as medication and surgery, are chosen based on the patient’s condition.

A portion of Barrett’s esophagus patients without symptoms can be left untreated and need regular review of gastroscopy.

When patients have GERD symptoms such as acid reflux and heartburn, they can be treated with medication, and it is recommended to go to the hospital and choose the medication option under the doctor’s guidance.

And in patients diagnosed with enteric Barrett’s esophagus with heterogeneous hyperplasia or cancer confined to the mucosal layer, endoscopic treatment can be performed.

Surgery should be considered when endoscopic treatment is ineffective, or when accompanied by refractory ulcers, severe esophageal strictures, or cancerous lesions.

Patients with Barrett’s esophagus should go to the hospital and have their doctors take into account their specific situation, make a comprehensive analysis, and choose the appropriate treatment plan.
