Nocturnal cough in children can be due to improper sleeping positions, poor indoor air circulation, excessive dryness, colds, respiratory infections, and relatively rare causes such as upper airway syndrome and allergic cough. Nocturnal coughs can seriously affect the quality of a child’s sleep, so it is important to identify the cause of a child’s nocturnal cough and provide targeted treatment. Open windows frequently to let fresh air into the room, keep the air temperature in the room appropriate, use an air humidifier when sleeping at night, and if your baby has nasal congestion, thoroughly cleaning the nasal passages before bedtime can prevent coughing caused by backflow of nasal secretions that stimulate the pharynx. If the cough is caused by an infectious disease, anti-infective treatment should be given for the pathogen and symptomatic treatment such as cough suppression and phlegm reduction should be given. In case of allergic cough, anti-allergic and nebulized inhalation treatment can be given. When your child coughs, you can adjust the child to a side-lying position or pick him/her up and gently pat the baby’s back to promote the expulsion of phlegm. You should try to make your child drink as much water as possible. You can also boil radish water and pear stew with rock sugar for your child, and do not eat foods with high sugar content. If the child’s symptoms still do not improve, it is recommended to take the child to the doctor in time.
