Atypical squamous epithelium of indeterminate significance (ASC-US) refers to abnormal cells found on cervical liquid-based cytology, but its specific significance is not clear. It may be caused by cervical inflammation, or it may be a precancerous lesion of the cervix, and most of the time, it is an atypical cellular alteration due to chronic inflammation of the cervix or simple HPV (human papillomavirus) infection.
