What does the amylase test do?

Amylase testing clinically includes blood amylase and urinary amylase, blood amylase contains two types of salivary amylase and pancreatic amylase, which are often used in clinical practice to determine whether a patient has an acute abdomen or acute pancreatitis by testing the index of amylase. Currently, according to international guidelines, blood amylase and blood lipase are the most standard indicators used to diagnose acute pancreatitis. When the amylase and lipase in the blood are more than three times the normal value, combined with the patient’s abdominal pain and imaging changes, the diagnosis of pancreatitis can be confirmed. Of course, when there are acute abdominal conditions, such as gallstones, intestinal perforation, intestinal obstruction, gynecological diseases, etc., there will also be an increase in blood amylase, but not more than 3 times. If the patient has a very high blood amylase, it is a diagnosis of mumps as amylase in saliva, accompanied by enlargement of the parotid gland. Blood amylase is a reliable indicator for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis in clinical practice, and urinary amylase is not used as an indicator on which to base the detection of pancreatitis.
