Macular degeneration surgery may lead to increased eye pressure. Macular degeneration surgery requires the use of anesthetics, which, when not fully metabolized, may cause an increase in intraocular pressure. However, the increase in eye pressure caused by this condition is usually transient and will resolve on its own when the anesthetic is completely metabolized out of the body. In some patients, the increase in IOP after macular degeneration surgery may also be caused by the use of silicone oil fillers during the surgical procedure. This usually requires no special treatment and the symptoms will resolve on their own. High intraocular pressure after macular degeneration surgery is usually a normal post-operative reaction and is not a sign of surgical failure. If in doubt, consult your doctor as soon as possible. Under the doctor’s guidance, symptomatic treatment can usually be relieved.
