The tests that need to be done for reflux esophagitis include gastroscopy, barium meal imaging of the esophagus, and 24-hour esophageal PH monitoring.
1. Gastroscopy: Gastroscopy is the most accurate method to diagnose reflux esophagitis, which can visualize the changes of esophageal mucosa and determine the severity of reflux esophagitis and whether there are any complications. Redness, swelling, ulceration and erosion of the esophageal mucosa can be seen under gastroscopy.
2. Barium esophagogram: Although the sensitivity of barium esophagogram in diagnosing reflux esophagitis is not high, for those who are unwilling or unable to tolerate gastroscopy, this test can help to exclude other esophageal diseases such as esophageal cancer.
3. 24-hour esophageal PH monitoring: 24-hour PH monitoring can clarify whether excessive acid or alkaline reflux is present in the esophagus.
