There is no such drug as Chuanxiong vine, which should refer to Chuanxiong rhizome, which is known to invigorate blood circulation, expel wind and relieve pain.
Chuanxiong is pungent in flavor and warm in nature. Attributes to the liver, gallbladder and pericardium meridians. It is used for chest paralysis (chest pain), heart pain, stabbing pain in the chest and ribs, swelling and pain, irregular menstruation, menstrual pain, obstruction of menstruation, abdominal pain in the abdomen and headache.
This product is pungent, dispersing, warming and promoting, which can not only activate blood circulation and remove blood stasis, but also move qi to relieve pain (by regulating the body’s qi to relieve pain), with the efficacy of promoting qi and blood circulation, so it treats dystocia (pain in the area of the coxae and ribs) of qi stagnation and blood stasis and all kinds of pains in the abdomen. It is often used with danshen, gui zhi and sandalwood to treat chest paralysis and heart pain caused by stagnation of the heart veins (blockage of the heart veins by blood stasis).
It is often used with Chai Hu, Bai Shao and Xiang Fu if it is used to treat dystocia of liver depression and stagnation of qi; and it is often used with Tao Ren and Safflower if it is used to treat stagnation of liver and blood, accumulation of lumps, and stabbing pains in the chest and hypochondrium. This product is pungent, warm, ascending and dispersing, it can dispel wind and relieve pain, and is the most important medicine for headache, regardless of wind-cold, wind-heat, wind-dampness, blood deficiency, blood stasis headache can be used in accordance with the evidence of the combination of the use of it.
The adverse effects of this product are not clear. Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong is warm and pungent, and is contraindicated in headache with yin deficiency and hyperactivity of yang. Caution should be exercised in cases of excessive sweating and menorrhagia.
