Myeloma is a malignant tumor.
Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a malignant tumor that originates in the hematopoietic tissue of the bone marrow and is caused by an overproduction of plasma cells. The abnormal plasma cells infiltrate the bones and their soft tissues, causing massive destruction of bone marrow, anemia, renal insufficiency, and abnormal immune function.
The disease may be asymptomatic in the early stages, with a few cases of back pain, but the extensive destruction of bones may lead to bone pain, pathologic fractures, anemia and cachexia. Bone marrow aspiration biopsy can definitively diagnose the disease, and the results suggest the presence of large numbers of abnormal plasma cells. Treatment of the disease is based on radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and surgical intervention is indicated in cases of pathologic fractures and spinal cord compression.
Anyone who suspects this disease is advised to seek prompt medical attention.
