When a ball is hit to the chest, generally speaking, the symptoms caused are mainly chest pain and discomfort. The causes are divided into two categories: first, is a simple, superficial chest wall soft tissue injury, when usually after 2-3 days of rest local symptoms can be alleviated, disappear. Second, the more serious ones can cause rib fractures or even pneumothorax, thus manifesting as pleural effusion and difficulty in breathing. Usually, further chest radiography or even CT chest examination is needed to make a clear diagnosis; in severe cases, thoracentesis is usually required. Therefore, after being hit in the chest, further chest radiography is needed to rule out the possibility of rib fracture or pleural effusion. For simple superficial soft tissue injuries, the symptoms can usually be relieved and disappear after rest.
