The latest diabetes epidemiological survey in China published in 2017 shows that diabetes has become a serious medical problem in China, with the survey showing that the overall prevalence of diabetes in Chinese adults is 10.9% and the total diabetes population is over 100 million, making it the most diabetic country in the world now. The WHO has also released a set of alarming data, stating that more than 500 million Chinese are in pre-diabetic adults, which means that nearly half of China’s population is at risk of developing diabetes. The traditional treatment for diabetes has been described by many internists and includes diet control, increased exercise, glucose-lowering medications and insulin injections. However, type 2 diabetes is a long-term disease, and as the disease progresses, blood glucose rises gradually and the difficulty of controlling it intensifies. However, traditional treatment methods cannot maintain the long-term stability of patients’ blood glucose, nor can they fundamentally prevent the occurrence of various complications. For obese diabetic patients, bariatric surgery is actually a very good option. In late 2013, Cleveland Medical Center announced its top 10 medical innovations, and bariatric surgery for diabetes was at the top of the list.
