The upper part of the navel includes the stomach, liver, spleen, gallbladder, common bile duct, head of the pancreas, duodenum, part of the transverse colon, and part of the small intestine. If a patient experiences pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen, stomach or gallbladder disease is more likely to be considered. Generally, the pain of gastric disease is located in the area below the xiphoid process and in the epigastric region, and abdominal pain, bloating, acid reflux, and belching will be present. Gastroscopy can be used to make a definitive diagnosis. If the diagnosis is chronic gastritis, oral medication is needed for treatment, such as omeprazole. If the diagnosis is gastric cancer, radical surgery for gastric cancer is needed. Cholecystitis and gallbladder stone pain is usually located in the right upper abdomen, under the rib margin, and sometimes under the raphe, accompanied by radiating pain in the back and the right scapula. Liver and gallbladder ultrasonography is needed to find out the stones inside the gallbladder and inflammation of the gallbladder wall, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy is recommended after the diagnosis is clear.
