Arthroscopic release of knee stiffness

There are many causes of knee stiffness, most commonly complications following fractures, such as severe tibial plateau or internal and external femoral condyle fractures; also seen in bone diseases such as tuberculosis and rheumatoid arthritis. The traditional treatment for knee stiffness is to cut the knee joint open and release the adhesion band and quadriceps plication. However, intra-articular release is often not thorough enough, and intra-operative manual release to forcefully flex the knee joint is prone to serious complications such as patellar fracture, femoral condyle fracture, patellar ligament rupture, etc. Moreover, the surgery is traumatic, and patients are unable to perform early functional exercises due to severe postoperative pain, resulting in adhesion reoccurrence and poor outcomes.
