Is there a possibility of ectopic pregnancy with in vitro transfer?

There is a possibility of ectopic pregnancy after IVF transfer. After IVF transfer, the embryo is placed in the uterus and the embryo can wander before it lays. If the embryo is placed on day 3, it may wander into the fallopian tube before implantation and there is a possibility of ectopic pregnancy if it implants in the fallopian tube. The incidence of ectopic pregnancy in assisted reproductive technology is about 3%-5%, and there is also intrauterine pregnancy combined with ectopic pregnancy, which is about 1%. If the HCG is elevated after in vitro transfer, but the patient is experiencing abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding, and the abdominal pain is getting progressively worse, ectopic pregnancy is highly suspected. In this case, ultrasound should be done to see if there is a mass in the adnexal area, and if there is a mass, watch for changes in blood HCG and the patient’s abdominal pain to prevent rupture of ectopic pregnancy. In case of intrauterine pregnancy combined with ectopic pregnancy, laparoscopic surgery can be performed to remove the ectopic pregnancy lesion and preserve the intrauterine pregnancy.
