Can you get rabies if you eat with chopsticks that have been licked by a dog?

You generally won’t get rabies if you eat with chopsticks that have been licked by a dog.

Rabies viruses are relatively fragile and can only survive in living cells in blood and body fluids, not in air, water or food, and these viruses will die quickly when left out of these blood and body fluids. The rabies virus is spread primarily through broken skin or mucous membranes and cannot cross undamaged skin; bites and scratches are the most common route.

The rabies virus has a short survival time in the natural environment. Even if the dog licked the chopsticks and there is saliva carrying the rabies virus, if there is no wound on the hand or mouth ulcers in the contact area, the dog will not be infected with rabies.

However, if the saliva on the chopsticks licked by the dog is still wet and carries the rabies virus, and there are wounds on the hands or in the mouth, the virus can enter the bloodstream through the wounds and become infected, but the incidence of this is very low.

If this happens, replace the chopsticks promptly and consult with the relevant department in the hospital to prevent the occurrence of rabies infection.
