Ultrasonographic manifestations of liver abscess

The presentation of liver abscess under ultrasound is divided into three periods, which are mainly categorized into the pre-abscess stage, the abscess formation stage, and the abscess absorption stage. In the pre-abscess stage, the boundary of the lesion is not clear, and the internal echogenicity is homogeneous. In the abscess formation stage, the lesion can be seen as anechoic area with clearer edges, thicker and rougher wall, not smooth inner wall, and the internal manifestation is anechoic area or a small amount of sparse fine dot-like echoes. In the resorption stage, the abscess may be characterized by patchy or striated hyperechoicity, which may help to diagnose liver abscess.
