What is vicarious traumatization

Vicarious traumatization is when people who have been exposed to traumatic events for a long period of time develop a traumatic reaction themselves. It is characterized by a variety of psychological anomalies that occur when a person who has witnessed a traumatic scene also experiences an emotional experience that exceeds his or her tolerance limits. The concept was initially referred to professionals who help others, such as police officers, firefighters, doctors, social workers, etc. These professionals have been exposed to traumatic experiences over a long period of time. These professionals are affected by the long-term exposure to people who have experienced traumatic events and experience similar traumatic reactions themselves. Vicarious trauma is often characterized by anorexia, easy fatigue, decreased physical fitness, sleep disturbances, irritability or irritability, lack of concentration, numbness, fear, and despair about what they have experienced. If there are signs similar to alternative trauma, it is recommended to seek the help of a psychiatrist for timely intervention and treatment.
