The time to remove the chest closed drainage tube is related to the different contents of the drainage, the different diseases that need to be drained, and whether the drainage tube is open or not. If the drainage is gas, caused by diseases such as pneumothorax, most of the pneumothorax can be absorbed within 3-5 days and the lung can be reopened, so the drainage tube can be removed, only a few pneumothorax drainage tubes need to be removed after 1 week. If the drainage tube is placed after surgery and the drainage is blood or leaking fluid, most of the drains can be removed in about 1 week. If an infectious disease or septic chest requires a drainage tube, it may need to be placed for about 2 weeks, some may need to be placed for more than 2-3 weeks, and some patients may still need a drainage tube after 3 weeks, however, by then the drainage tube may not be patent and needs to be removed and repositioned.
