Abscess thorax is caused by the invasion of pathogenic bacteria into the pleural cavity, which leads to a purulent infection and causes the disease. Most abscesses are complications of intra-pulmonary infections, a few are caused by infections of adjacent organs and a small number can be caused by chest trauma, surgery, sepsis and septicaemia.
