PRL refers to prolactin, which can be elevated for a variety of reasons, including physiologic and pathologic reasons. Physiological prolactin is usually elevated due to stress, for example, prolactin may be elevated if strenuous exercise is performed prior to a blood test, and prolactin may also be elevated in breastfeeding women and pregnant women. Pathologically elevated prolactin is usually caused by medications, such as stomach medications, blood pressure medications, and psychotropic drugs, which can cause prolactin to rise. If a patient’s prolactin is more than 5 times the upper limit of normal, it may be caused by a prolactinoma, a tumor produced by the pituitary lactating cells. It is recommended that patients with high prolactin should go to a regular hospital in a timely manner to complete relevant tests and use symptomatic treatment under the guidance of a doctor.
