How much wine should you drink?

  The following amounts of alcohol are relatively safe. For men <140g per week and for women <70g per week; for men <350ml per week, equivalent to <50ml per day; for women <175ml per week, equivalent to <25ml per day; for beer at 4% alcohol, <625ml per day for men and half that for women. Long-term heavy drinking can lead to toxic liver injury, which can progress to alcoholic hepatitis, liver fibrosis and eventually alcoholic cirrhosis. In general, the onset of the disease can occur with an average daily alcohol equivalent of ≥40g for men and ≥20g for women, with a history of heavy drinking of >80g/d for five consecutive years or two weeks.
